The town of Woodside looks set to extend its plastic bag ban.
The US town of Woodside's paper bags era could be set to continue with the county council predicted to extend its ban on the use of plastic carriers. Currently, there is only a law in place to ban single use of plastics at check-out counters such as those in grocery stores or supermarkets but that could soon be made more wide-ranging. Under plans which could get the green light this week, this ban may be extended to cover all of the region's retail outlets as the US continues its battle against the environmentally-unfriendly plastic bag. If, as has been suggested, the council looks to acts on its 2012 vote of support for the concept of a wide-ranging plastic ban, then a new ordinance could be introduced as quickly at tomorrow. From then, it would take around 30 days for the law to come into effect, although any restrictions put in place would not apply to restaurants or non-profit organisations. In terms of the design of the ordinance, it has been specifically put together so that it can be adopted by 24 nearby communities while fending off any possible lawsuits from bag manufacturers. Indeed, the law package comes with an environmental impact report (EIR), designed to show just what benefits a ban could have. According to Almanac News, Dean Peterson, the director of the county's Department of Environmental Health, told the council back in 2012: "So far, no one has sued (over an ordinance) with an EIR attached." The news provider also reports that many of the local councils would be keen on supporting a wider ban on plastic bag with some fully expecting it to happen. Menlo Park council have even taking on a research project to decide whether or not it would be able to make revisions to the law. These changes include a clause which would allow the council to vote on whether they should implement any future changes made to the law by the county.
