The paper bag industry is on the grow, according to manufacturers in India.

Paper bags could soon be on the rise in various parts of the world, with various countries banning or restricting the use of their plastic equivalent.

One such area is the Haryana district of India, where the government has put in place a blanket ban on the usage and manufacture of plastic carrier bags.

However, far from it being seen as an inconvenience, it is actually looked on by many in the region as a driver of economic opportunity, especially for manufacturers of paper bags.

Sanjay Kumar is the owners of a paper bag manufacturer and supplier in Gurgaon and he told the Economic Times that business is good at the minute, with the potential to keep growing.

Mr Kumar said: "We have seen around 20 per cent rise in our business in the city and, if the ban on polythene is properly implemented our business is set to grow 100 per cent."

Not only is the ban likely to have a positive effect for paper manufacturers in the city, it will also provide a handy boost for the environment as well, given that plastic bags don't biodegrade.

Mr Kumar, who only got into the business five years ago, said demand has grown remarkably ever since the ban came into place.

He said: "The demand, however, has started rising two years back only due to the rise in awareness besides the ban on the use of polythene bags."

Mr Kumar added that an awareness among the population of the region was a major factor too, with people now realising just how much more environmentally friendly paper bags are in comparison to plastic.

Indeed, so much has the paper bag industry grown in the region, that more and more businesses are setting up to take advantage of demand both from consumers and big firms.

Another manufacturer, who provides printed food packaging products, said a decision by fast food chain KFC to use paper bags had caused a surge in work for him and his staff.
