Mobile workers prefer to own bigger bags, according to a new survey.

The study from iHubbub, a new social network for the home business and freelancer community, found that most of these workers prefer a bag over a briefcase and that size was extremely important.

Poll respondents admitted to owning between two and 50 bags, with rucksacks the bag of choice for 74 per cent.

Rather than choosing polished or professional looking briefcases, bags that are a little less formal and offer a greater range of shapes, colours and sizes were preferable.

This could include thicker cotton bags, designed for their comfort, sturdiness and ease of storage when not in use.

Some 83 per cent of people surveyed said that they chose a large bag size in order to carry mobile working tools, such as laptops, iPads and groceries.

Colour and comfort ranked highest in importance, followed by cost, durability and space.

Other factors that were considered when choosing a bag were shown to be how stylish it is perceived and how many pockets it has both inside and out.

Also in the survey were questions concerning what mobile workers tend to keep in their everyday bags.

Typical items included cards, cash, phones, pens, lip balm and glasses, while more unusual things mentioned were a mini-torch, a picture of Johnny Depp and an ice hockey puck.

However, while many of those questioned were vocal with their opinions of what makes the perfect bag they readily admitted to not being fussy enough when making purchases.

Some people revealed that often they can pick up three or four new bags on one shopping spree, many of which are not used and end up in a cupboard or in a charity shop.

This represents the need to take care when buying a new bag, whether it is for work or leisure purposes, taking into account many factors before purchasing.
