Kuwait has revealed far-reaching plans to be free of plastic bags by 2020.
Kuwait is to join the green revolution and ban plastic bags by 2020, it has been revealed. The Gulf state, which is small in size but rich in oil, wants to create a culture where it is normal for people not to use plastic bags. Instead, it would like its citizens to opt for reusable paper bags, which have been dubbed bags for life. It is also keen on fostering an atmosphere where bags that are used for shopping are bio-degradable, as it is often the case that people forget about them when heading to a supermarket for example. This means they end up accruing lots of bags. Many people will feel comfortable in the fact that if they put such bags in the bin, they will not blight the environment, as they will simply wither away naturally. The Environment Public Authority (EPA) has set itself an ambitious task. Its chairman Salah Al-Midhi said in a speech that the country is looking to make far-reaching changes. As such, new types of bags have been envisaged. The message is simple – we want to be free of plastic bags. The Kuwait Times reported that one of the reasons the state is keen on this is simply a matter of space. Kuwait is a small country and it is more practical for its leaders to free up land used for dumps and direct it towards other projects that can benefit the state over the long-term. It could be the case that this is part of wider changes being considered. Though it is one of the world's leading oil producers, it appreciates that it needs to diversify its economy if it is going to thrive in a post-financial crash world. As the first Gulf state to have an elected parliament, it has the history, energy and mindset to make this happen.
