A bid to ban plastic bags is to be put forward in San Clemente, USA.

Islanders given chance to design personalised shopping bags

The Coastal Advisory Committee in San Clemente, USA, is soon to request that plastic bags be banned in the town.

According to the OC Register, the CAC are keen for retailers to stop issuing plastic bags because of the damage that they are having on the local environment with their paper equivalent a much more sustainable alternative.

The committee will make an appeal in February and is currently putting together the presentation which will spell out why a plastic bag ban will be the next step for the city's Clean Ocean Program.

In an effort to reduce the levels of ocean pollution close to the city, there has already been a ban put in place on polystyrene and plastic foam containers with committee chairman Bill Hart telling the newspaper that "it's time" to outlaw plastic bags.

Currently less than five per cent of such bags are recycled in San Clemente and although a ban is supported by the majority of the City Council this feeling has not been converted into votes, meaning it hasn't reached a stage where it could become law.

The committee argue that bans have already been put in place in Long Beach, Los Angeles as well as Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica and Malibu with no negative effects felt by businesses or consumers.

If a ban was actioned in San Clemente, then chances are it would be similar to one that was set in motion on January 1st in Laguna Beach.

This allows shoppers in the city to bring their own reusable paper bags free of charge or pay the retailer a small fee for each one used.

While some residents have expressed concern about the financial impact which could be put on retailers in the area, it seems as though this may not necessarily be the case.

According to Tom Bonigut, an assistant city engineer, the California Grocers Association would actually support a ban in San Clemente ban if it was consistent with similar rules put in place across the state.
