Families in Vancouver are preparing gift bags for terminally ill children.

Vancouver families make gift bags for terminally ill children

Families in Lyncburg, Vancouver have taken inspiration from their own personal struggles and decided to offer festive gift bags for terminally ill local children.

The Norman and Ellis families told WDBJ7.com that this time of year can be difficult for those in hospital, especially children.

Mother Cheryl Ellis said that it is a season of remembrance for the family, as it is when her daughter Amanda was first diagnosed with cancer.

She explained: "It was hard for us. We were in the hospital and Santa Claus brings us these little bags for the kids and that just helped get us through."

Meanwhile, the Norman family, whose son Nathan has developed cancer in his brain and spine, admitted that their strength made an impression.

Ms Ellis said: "When Nathan was diagnosed, I knew exactly what they were thinking and feeling."

Sadly Amanda passed away seven years ago, but Nathan is still taking treatment.

Despite these upsetting events, both families are choosing to share the festive spirit with others by making gift bags and delivering them to sick children in nearby hospitals.

Chris Ellis, Amanda's father explained to the publication: "It allows us to honour our daughter and to help other families who are walking through that valley we've been through."

Each of the bags is filled with toys, as well as a copy of the Bible, however some hospitals have objected to the religious text.

However, this inclusion is important, as Liberty Christian Academy student and volunteer, Lewis Williams admitted that for some children this is the only Christmas they will get.

"Sometimes the families are choosing Christmas or chemo at this point and chemo wins out, so letting them have a few toys, crayons and the Bible really means a lot.

The families began the gift bag drive a few years ago, with the initial goal of making 1,000.

Thanks to continued support from the community and hospitals they have given out 3,000 to children in need of a festive treat.
