Volunteers from Sioux City celebrated Charity Gift Bag Day last weekend.
Volunteers from across Sioux City, Iowa were hard at work this weekend as they celebrated Charity Gift Bag Day. The event originally began 11 years ago when one of the owners of Heirloom Creations in Sioux Falls, Sara Snuggerud, chose to give presents rather than receive them on her birthday. KDLT reports that after gathering some friends together, they began marking National Make A Difference Day in their own way by making it Charity Gift Bag Day. Scraps of fabric from the store are used to make the bags, which are then sewn together and filled with travel size products, before being donated to nearby shelters. Ms Snuggerud said: "All year we've had people sewing these zipper bags and then also dropping off soaps, shampoos, toothbrushes and toothpaste. "You don't realise how much the community needs these until you see what it takes. When we drop these off and they are like thank you, we were running out, or we ran out months ago." Fellow volunteer, Melania Barnes, who is in her fourth year of helping with the project, told the site that she enjoyed being a part of the scheme and bringing some comfort to others in the community. "I'd like to give back to those who need some help. I think at any point in our lives, we all need a little help," she explained. The group are made up of volunteers of all ages, from small children to grandparents, each looking to do their part for the local area and its homeless residents by making gift bags. Ms Snuggerud went on to explain that part of the motivation for this annual project comes from the late Senator George McGovern, who was keen to promote community plans to help others. "My passion is when we do things for charity, that it stays in your community. And I know he has done a lot for that," she said. Shopping Bags Direct is a leading retailer of Gift Bags.
