Paper bags are to discourage Delhi drivers from drinking before getting behind the wheel.

Paper bags to discourage Delhi drink drivers (JIunlimited)

Drivers in Delhi are being discouraged from drink driving thanks to an ingenious new project involving paper bags.

Some 574 drunk drivers were caught and prosecuted on December 31st, however this technique was deemed not to be effective enough, forcing traffic police to think up an unconventional new technique.

This year paper bags are being released featuring facts and figures about the outcomes of drink driving, Hindustan Times reports.

As well as this, the bags will feature news articles about fatal accidents in a bid to dramatically reduce the number of people getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol.

Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of traffic police, told the newspaper: "In the first phase, we have circulated 20,000 such paper packets to the DSIIDC liquor shops.

"This is an awareness generating initiative on our part. When a person buys liquor from a shop, his attention will be drawn to the content - 23,829 people prosecuted, 6,578 people arrested and 968 driving licenses suspended till November, 2012, etc - printed on the packet."

The initiative aims to target frequent drinkers or those who buy their own alcohol, and hopes to become as commonplace as health warnings on cigarette packaging.

More bags are expected to be introduced to the world famous Holi Festival in March and police are keen to seek feedback from local people and business owners.

Crackdowns on drink driving will continue as usual, however this new strategy is hoped to help assist the tougher stance on this dangerous problem.

On New Year's Eve around 100 teams of traffic police took to the streets and used breathalyser tests at random to catch out those who were drunk behind the wheel.

They were also quick to stop any drivers breaking speeding limits or appearing to be under the influence of alcohol.

During the New Year period 167 vehicles, mostly cars, were also impounded.
