A newspaper is helping with a Thanksgiving paper bag food drive in Santa Maria.
A newspaper in Santa Barbara, US is giving away paper bags today as part of a local food drive. The Santa Maria Times is handing out free paper grocery bags to readers so they can then fill them with foods such as canned meat, peanut butter and wheat pasta. Once packed, they can be given to any Albertsons grocery store or the Food Bank in Santa Maria, although only 100 bags are available so locals are advised to head down early. The charity scheme is being run in support of the Santa Barbara County Foodbank's Annual Holiday Food Drive, which began on November 1st and continues until December 21st. This recent donation rush is catered specifically towards Thanksgiving, and frozen turkeys and sides can also be given during the Car Show and Turkey Drive, taking place on November 10th. Speaking to the Santa Maria Times, Darlene Chavez, Foodbank community leadership manager, said that the charity's goal was to collect 2,500 turkeys. However, she was keen to add that yams, stuffing, canned vegetables and monetary donations would be greatly appreciated, as these can help run specific Thanksgiving events for those in need. This weekend's occasion will include DJs from Sunny Country radio, stalls and craft vendors, plus a hot dog barbecue for the whole family to enjoy. Locals can enter any make and model into the car show, while dealers and vintage vehicle traders will also be making an appearance. Ms Chavez explained that for every $1 donated to the charity, the Foodbank is able to buy $17 worth of groceries. She added: "We get quite a bit, but we can never get enough. When we get the food, the non-profit agencies get it the next day. As fast as it comes in, it goes out. There's just such a need in our county."
