Brookline, Massachusetts is preparing for its plastic bag ban.
Brookline, Massachusetts is preparing for a ban on non-recyclable plastic bags, after a motion was passed earlier this month. The prohibition would affect retail establishments larger than 2,500 square feet or where there are three businesses in town the same size, as well as supermarkets who gross $1 million annually and retail pharmacies of which there are two or more. Wicked Local reports that impacted firms have until December 2013 to fully comply, and with many facing similar bans in other communities, businesses are preparing to embrace the changes. Speaking to the publication, Mike DeAngelis, of CVS, which has locations in Washington, Rhode Island and California, said that the company has already begun using paper bags instead in these locations, while selling reusable bags to customers. "We comply with all local and state bans when they go into effect," he explained, adding that this will soon be done in Brookline. Meanwhile, Steve Sylven, a representative for Star Market, said in an email: "While we generally prefer mandates on bags to be dealt with at the state level to avoid customer confusion and mitigate competitive impact, we also recognise this issue to be an important one to the Brookline Community." However, while the reaction to the plastic bag ban has been largely positive, some proprietors have raised concerns, with smaller businesses apprehensive about potential negative impacts. Brett Albert, owner of Baja Betty's Burritos on Harvard Street, said that he was concerned about the costs of switching from plastic to paper bags. While smaller businesses are not at present expected to comply with the plastic bag ban, such comments highlight a need for affordable bespoke paper bags or reusable cotton bags.
