The Jefferson County Humane Society is using gift bags to help fundraise for local cats.

On Sunday November 11th, a major fundraiser is being held in Wintersville to help pay towards the county humane officer, the housing and feeding of cats at the animal shelter and funding for medical treatment for homeless animals.

The event will contain an auction, a brunch and lots of gift bags and the chance to win a holiday shopping experience, the Herald Star reports.

Nicknamed the 'Whisker Whirl', it asks visitors to pay a small charity entrance fee, which automatically enters people into winning major prizes.

This includes donations from vendors, who are expected to be offering makeup vouchers, jewellery, candles, pottery, spa days, personal chefs, designer gift bags, antiques and food hampers for the lucky winners.

Kathy Gagin of the Humane Society told the newspaper that the Whisker Whirl will raise money "for the costs associated with the rescue of dog and cat health certificates, shots and transport, educational programs on the importance of spay and neutering, along with proper care and treatment of off-site adoptions for dogs and cats".

As well as this, the cash will go towards the purchase of equipment such as "cleaning supplies, hand tools, ladders, tables, chairs, computers, printers, file cabinets, shelving, a storage shed, coffee maker, microwave, stand alone cages, transport cages, office supplies, food, towels, leashes and shampoo," she added.

The donations will also help fund the work of volunteers and a manned phone line, which members of the public can use to report homeless animals and those in need of help.

Ms Gagin expressed her heartfelt thanks to the local community for supporting the project, as well as the hard work put in by the shelter staff.

She explained the importance of fundraisers such as this weekend's event, and stressed that they were necessary to care for animals, rehome them and ultimately keep the number of euthanisations down.
