Geelong is celebrating Brown Paper Bag Day with charitable donations.
Geelong in Victoria, Australia is celebrating Brown Paper Bag Day today. The city, citizens of whom usually carries its lunch in small paper bags, are being urged to support food charities by donating the equivalent of what they might spend on their midday meal, the Geelong Advertiser reports. Feed Geelong and the Brown Paper Bag Day event have been reaching out to local businesses and have recruited over 800 staff at 17 major local employers to help lead the way. This includes the Geelong Cats, Diversitat and GMHBA. Geelong's mayoral candidates even put their differences aside, with six out of the nine turning up at Christ Church yesterday (October 15th) to support the good cause. The newspaper itself is also running a Feed Geelong campaign, along with food rescue agency FareShare and Give Where You Love to help raise awareness of the seriousness of hunger and poverty in the local area. This coincides with World Food Day, which focuses on food security, a cause which is echoed by each of the candidates. Give Where You Live chief executive Bill Mithen reaffirmed that issue and called on the directly elected mayor to place this issue high on the city's agenda. Christ Church's charitable meal scheme is one way the city is tackling the problem, however, convenor Col Hastings said that Brown Paper Bag Day was essential in raising awareness to what is largely a hidden hunger problem. Despite the volunteers serving 63 breakfasts, he said: "People ask, 'where are these people?' and I say well they could be the people living next door to you, couldn't they?" Organisers hope that by donating even the small amount of money spent on lunch to the project that such campaigns would be able to last longer, and that the issue of hunger would be less of a taboo subject in Geelong.
