Children in Brownsville, Texas are being given paper gift bags for Christmas.
Children in Brownsville, Texas are being given an extra special surprise this Christmas thanks to a charitable group. The Children and Adult Relief Effort organisation in the city has been hard at work filling paper gift bags with toys and treats for those who may not receive any presents this year. According to the Brownsville Herald, 300 were handed out this weekend as part of a tradition which has been going on for 20 years. Jessica Molina, executive director for the organisation, which was originally founded by her grandfather, Bob Clark, explained that the group catered for those children whose parents are in the nearby Cameron County prison. Most of the kids on their list, given to them by prison officials, now live in foster care or with grandparents. Ms Molina said: “I know it’s a little bit, but a little bit goes a long way, especially for the people that have their parents incarcerated. Holding on to a stuffed animal is probably what’s going to get them through the night.” But, it’s not just these children who are helped, as any leftover paper bags were given to other members of the community who are struggling to get by over the holiday season. The bulk of the toys given away were kindly donated by the Brownsville Police Department, as well as other community members. Imelda Garza, community affairs officer for the police department, told the newspaper: “It’s like they see police officers positively rather than just in a negative way, like seeing their parents being taken away.” “We see their smile,” Ms Garza said. “That’s what we are looking forward to.” As well as donating gifts to the cause, local people spared time to help pack each of the bags, ensuring that the toys and treats were evenly distributed for all the children to enjoy.
