Paper carrier bags could soon be on the rise in Langport after a campaign group called for an end to the use of plastic carriers.

Transition Langport believes that the town should be made into a 'plastic bag free zone' for the benefit of the environment and called on retailers to make small charges on plastics or offer a paper alternative.

A supporting film, entitled Bag It, was recently shown in the small Devonshire town of Modbury with 43 small independent shops and a large Co-op store lending their backing to the scheme.

Transition Langport's town councillor, Cara Naden, told Thisisthewestcountry.co.uk that small changes made in the region could help have a major global impact on the environment.

She said: "The Pacific Ocean may sound a long way from Langport but when you consider that plastic waste could enter the food chain, the problem is closer than you think.

"We accept that national retailers will be more resistant to change but we will still bring it to their attention."

Also on the list of demands from the group, is for the government to bring in legislation already used in Wales, which would see people charged for each plastic bag they use.

This, in effect, would discourage people from using them and make paper bags more attractive.

Ms Naden added: "We would love to see that we are a plastic packaging free community but that is quite a major hill to climb.

"Plastic bags are an easy target to start with because we can re-use them as much as possible and then dispose of them through recycling."

Also on the list of future plans for the group are showings of shorter, more condensed versions of the film in local primary and secondary schools as well as sixth-form colleges.
