Toronto city council is preparing to re-examine its controversial plastic bag ban.
Canada Press reports that the contentious proposition to ban single-use bags could be either delayed or reversed after a motion filed by councillor Peter Milczyn asked for it to be reconsidered.
A report has also been delivered this week from city solicitor Anna Kinastowski advising the council about possible legal action against Toronto which could result from the ban.
This comes from Ontario's Convenience Stores Association, which argues that if the ban is implemented on January 1st 2013 it could affect business.
However, similar decisions made in cities across the US show that switching to paper bags or charging a small five cent fee for plastic bags could actually be beneficial to businesses.
The plastic bag ban was first introduced by councillor David Shiner back in June, however the council voted to eliminate a levy in favour of flat-out prohibition of these carrier bags.
Mr Shiner tacked the motion onto the plan to eliminate the fee, however, it was met with some confusion.
Concerns were raised that Toronto council had moved too hastily in approving the motion without seeking public consultations, from both residents and local businesses.
While the environmental benefits of introducing reusable carrier bags, such as paper bags and cotton shopping bags, have been praised by the public, some businesses are requiring greater assurance from officials that the ban would be beneficial in both the short and long-term.
