Residents in Snowmass have voted against plastic and paper bag regulations.

Residents in Snowmass Village, Colorado have voted against proposals to regulate plastic and paper bags.

The Snowmass Sun reports that preliminary results show that almost 53 per cent of locals disagreed with a planned ban, saying that they didn't want the town to pursue any form of ordinance on the distribution and use of single-use, disposable plastic and paper bags.

Originally the council were alerted to the issue by Mayor Bill Boineau, who sought to question the idea. However, since his rebuttal he is choosing not to pursue this legislation any further.

"That's why I asked them to put it on the ballot," he explained.

After bringing up the idea in the summer, Mayor Boineau had hoped to draft an ordinance to the council, yet with a lack of time the council chose to put forward an advisory question to gauge public opinion about the bag regulations.

In November they reported negatively by a slim margin, however the mayor still believes that the issue requires further awareness.

"I do believe there could be a good educational program of some sort that helps businesses and people in the community do something different than always using plastic bags," Mayor Boineau explained.

This sentiment was echoed by Kelly Vaughn, director of communications at the Environmental Advisory Board, who claimed that raising awareness was always going to be a priority.

She told the newspaper: "There doesn't have to be a regulation or a ban or legislation passed in order for there to be education around single-use plastic bags."

Hotels and businesses within the area have already embraced a changing attitude towards these disposable plastic bags, with many offering their own reusable cotton bags or reinforced paper bags.
