Plastic bags have now been banned in Laguna Beach, California.
Following a ruling in Laguna Beach, plastic bags have now been banned, making it the first city to do so in California. Paper bags are allowed but their plastic equivalent will now be largely removed from all retail stores except for eating premises. Some grocers and pharmacies are choosing to offer paper bags and charge ten cents for each one used. Because state law requires that prescriptions be put in a paper bag, this won't be affected and will still be available for free, with the scheme part of a wider drive to encourage the reuse of bags and reduce the effect on the current environment. He told the news provider: "Once you get used to it, it's going to be smart." "At the beginning, it's to be going to be hard for everybody because they have to pay for the bags." The environmental negativity involved with plastic bags is evident in the area given what's known as the Great Garbage Patch - a large area of rubbish that can be found near to the coast in the Pacific Ocean. Morgan Pusey, a manager of Whole Foods Market in Laguna, said this was a major problem and explained that plastics are a major issue in sustainability. He said: "Basically when you look at the break-down process of a plastic bag, you're talking about something that can sit in landfills and pollute the environment by not being biodegradable – at least not rapidly biodegradable." Mr Pusey added that one of the main problems with plastic bags is that they photodegrade, which means that rather than completely biodegrading they will simply break down into smaller pieces. This in turn represents a problem, as these pieces can find their way into the food chain.
