Shoppers in Los Angeles are to be rewarded for using reusable bags.
Shoppers in Los Angeles are to be rewarded for avoiding plastic bags and instead bringing reusable paper and cotton bags with them. On December 20th, local grocery stores will be celebrating the sixth annual Day Without a Bag, Hollywood Patch reports. Sponsored by local non-profit organisation Heal the Bay, it is likely to be the last similar event, due to the city proposing an ordinance banning plastic bags from May 23rd 2013. Free reusable shopping bags are to be distributed by select stores, with some offering discounts for customers who have planned ahead and brought their own. Rewards such as gift cards, t-shirts and sweets are also to be given out. Heal the Bay's program director, Meredith McCarthy, said in a statement that the group was hoping the holiday season would be the last time the community will use plastic bags as they go about their Christmas shopping. "We want shoppers to get in the habit of using the reusable bags stashed in their closets and car trunks all year round. Bringing your own reusable bag is one of the easiest ways to have a positive impact on your own neighbourhood and improve the health of our oceans," she went on to say. Los Angeles is currently preparing to join a host of other Californian cities to have already adopted similar plastic bag bans, such as Malibu, Santa Monica and West Hollywood. The city moved forward with the single-use plastic ordinance after a California Supreme Court in July 2011 ruled that cities should not have to conduct an environmental report before imposing a bag ban. This means that so long as businesses, officials and residents are in favour of such a decision, it can go ahead. According to Heal the Bay, there has been a 95 per cent reduction in plastic bag distribution since the Los Angeles County began phasing in the ban in July 2011.
