Snowmass Village is to debate the distribution of plastic and paper bags next week, to assess how to move forward.

Residents are to be asked for their opinions on a proposed policy to limit single-use plastic carrier bags on some level.

Aspen Times reports that receiving voter approval in the upcoming election would not mean that a specific ordinance would be implemented at this time, however it would help officials understand the direction to take regulations in.

Sally Sparhawk, resident and chairwoman of the town's Environmental Advisory Board, told the publication: "It's not … if you say 'yes' you're locked into a certain thing.

"It's 'yes’, we at Snowmass Village should explore this.'"

Ms Sparhawk went on to explain that the town could go on to follow ordinances brought in by Aspen and Carbondale this year to enact ordinances in grocery stores to stop the free distribution of plastic bags.

"There are many options… that range from just voluntarily encouraging people to bring bags to the store to what Aspen does, to even more.

"We could do something very true to Snowmass and our guests," she went on to add.

Earlier this summer, Mayor Bill Boineau asked the council whether a similar ordinance to those nearby would be necessary, however not enough information had been sought at the time.

Now, with greater awareness and time for residents to cast their votes and make their opinions heard a new consultation period is being opened.

The plastic bag ban appears to be in the interest of businesses, however concerns have been raised about the impact on tourism.

Many firms are suggesting improving awareness of a plastic bag prohibition so it does not negatively affect the town's tourist trade.
